Rumours have been flying around the world of communications technology for the past month that Apple is gearing up for a major new product release – perhaps the hotly-anticipated iPhone 5, perhaps even more – to be announced in early September.
The rumours claim that Apple will not only announce the release of the iPhone 5 (the posited launch date is the 21st) but will also announce a suite of other revamped and new products, such as new versions of the iPod Nano and iPod Touch, or the entirely new iPad Mini – a 7-inch media tablet version of the iPad.
In the past, Apple’s approach to new product releases has followed the pattern these rumours suggest – products are announced around September or October and are released to market usually less than a month later. An announcement in early to mid-September will put any new Apple product firmly on the cusp of Q3 and Q4 of 2012, which will benefit Apple’s sales in the run-up to Christmas.
Some of Apple’s suppliers have let slip that this rumour is likely to be true. Takashi Okuda, President of Sharp, which makes Apple’s touchscreens, has indicated that deliveries of screens for the new iPhone 5 began in August. If these particular rumours are true, the new touchscreen will be a 4-inch 16:9 ratio display running at 1136 x 640 resolution. This would be quite a departure for Apple, which has previously favoured the 3:2 aspect ratio for their current 3.5-inch, 960×640 screens.
